Am looking to camp with my son this summer and am looking for fields with at least 650m of runway that also allow camping. Any suggestions would be most welcome
I've camped out at dozens of medium sized airfields in my aerobatics contest years, so I'm speaking from experience.
Very few airfields have actual campsites - none that I know of - but many that are not international airports will allow you to camp if you're discreet about it. I suggest you plan your route, then phone a few and ask. Big airports have big security problems and I'd be amazed if any said yes. Probably a good rule of thumb is those with grass runways might let you, while those with hard runways probably won't.
A big snag is access to the loos (though you will probably be able to find an outside tap) because at most of the airfields where I've camped all the buildings had to be locked overnight for insurance reasons. I used to bring my own water and a gas stove and food as well as a tent and sleeping bag (in a Stampe!)
The only airfield I personally know of that has an actual campsite is in France - Angers.
One airfield that allows its parachutists to stay overnight, and has chalets for them, is Lashenden Headcorn. We've a profile of Lashenden in the next issue of Pilot, which is out in just over a week. - Editor.
PS Good luck with Pprune, but they are more for professional pilots. Use this website for general aviation.
If you're going top ask on Pprune (and Id' say it IS worth asking), the place you need to ask the question in is the Private Flying forum (http://www.pprune.org/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=63). Its the place to discuss and PPL related avitaion topics.
PPrune is an excellent site, but you can't blame me for recommending Pilot's!
I forgot to add that Nigel Everett wrote an article about camping at airfields in Pilot around five years ago. I suggest you phone him 01626 776199 or e-mail nigel.everett@btclick.com - Editor.
PS It would be great if you kept the rest of us informed via this website about how you get on.
