Hi Simon

I am flying in Aberdeen at present and have done 36 hrs so far. I became interested in helicopter ppl (h) during march 2005. Really enjoying the flying and looking foward to getting that licence.

Hi Jc,

Thanks for the reply, Are you flying from aberdeen airport,as i'm training just outside aberdeen at culter with HJS.

your a good bit further on than me as i've only amassed 9 hrs at present but i'm hoping for more lessons when i get off this oil rig i'm on as i type this reply to you.

I was under the Impression that there were no helicopter schools in aberdeen?

anyway good luck with your training.

safe flying

Thanks for your mail Si.

I am also flying at HJS (I really shouldn't class culter as Aberdeen, but when I talk with most people about the flying, they are from outwith the area!). I would be interested to know how you got into flying?.  How does the R22 compare to the H used for the rig?. I see that you are on 9hrs, looking back at my log book and I remember cleary that it was my 9th lesson when I got the chance to start the H up on my own for the 1st time. It was a great  feeling and one which I will always remember. What stage are you at?.

Although I have done 36hrs I have been unable during the last 6 months to fly with any continuity of time. Due to a lot of travelling last year, and running a very hectic business, I have unfortunatley had many gaps of weeks between flights.  After a 10 week gap I flew again on 28th Jan and was a bit concerned that I hadn't flown for so long.. Luckily all went well and the training has remained with me and I wasn't too rusty.  I am now getting ready to prepare for my 1st solo flight which should be during the next few weekends (weather permitting) . I am really looking foward to this and I am told once the solo is out of the way then the rest sinks in very quickly.

Well I'm sure that we will have the chance to say hello next time at culter, I usually fly Sat and Sun when I can.

Happy flying

Cheers

JC.

Hi JC,

well it's good to hear from a fellow hjs student, I first wanted to fly helicopters over 12 years ago but couldn't afford to  as i had a young familyat the time(you know kids aint cheap)! I'm a bit older now and although it's still very expensive i felt i could afford to at least start flying.

The helicopters used to ferry people offshore are mainly super-puma's and occasionally S61's

you do get smaller ones like the s76's but even these smaller ones are much larger than the tiny R22,

that said as you well know the tiny robinson is still great fun to fly.

I'm just finishing off climbing& descending(lesson 6) and soon hope to go onto lesson 7.

I still dont feel confident enough to start the helicopter myself, but hopefully i will in a lesson or two's time.

I hope to see you at hjs in the near future, good luck with your solo when it comes around.
