I am really keen to get my PPL and will be in US this summer so was going to train at Ormond beach in Florida for £2999 including 3 weeks accomodation. I have limited time available so need the intensive route and also don't have wads of cash to spend. I have recently been told that Ormond beach is a "factory" and the training is very poor. Can anyone suggest somewhere else on the east coast? Somewhere must have a good reputation!??? cheers, John    Report

I too was going to go to ormand beech but they could not give me the correct forms to get a visa. I've since heard a few stories about them so I'm glad I didn't. I went to Orlando Flight Training in Kissimmee. I just got back 2 weeks ago and I cannot fault the place. I got my JAA PPL in 3 weeks, very hard work though, better to allow 4. Most places in the US advertising 3 wk PPL courses the instruction is poor as the instructors tend to be pilots building hours and usually they themsleves dont have much more than 3-400 hrs. The other problem you will find is that they often don't knwo too much about UK airspace etc. This is not intended to put you off as I did exactly what you plan on doing as i like yourself only had 3 wks. It is possible but expect to do lots of studying, a good idea might be to buy/borrow some books before you leave. The flying bit is the easy part, its the exams which take time to digest all the information. OBA is a factory but if you are prepared to work hard go for it you probably wont find anything cheaper. Good instruction, Brit CAA Examiner, nice place, nice people. The instructors were good. I thought is was excellent. I have had more instruction back in the UK to brush up, keep current , etc.... but I have no complaints about OFT at all. I did hear one or two stories about Ormond Beach, indeed 2 people on my course had left there feeling quite unhappy. This was 3 years ago so things might be different now. Good luck.    Report

John, Last comment from me! - If you go for the 3 week trip, you must fly, fly and fly...... and fly some more. A few people didn't make the 45hrs minimum when I did it, which is a shame. A day off or a lost day due to the hang-over from the night before is a waste.    Report

I've found in the past certain individuals who have done crash courses in the USA have struggled when they have returned. Remember that day in day out the weather in Florida is the same. Guaranteed if you fly here in the morning and then again in the afternoon 9 out of 10 times the weather is different. You dont experience the change in weather there as much, the ATC and flight rules are all different. I feel that if your a PPL wanting to fly as a PPL here in the UK learn in the UK. Will certainly cost you more but you'll learn more about your own surrounding and you will feel more comfortable when you want to fly solo when you have that magic licence in your hand.    Report

Sander, The website for OBA is www.flyoba.com I can tell you that the company is owned by a English guy who was once upon a time the Operations Manager or something like that for a ex uk airline called Capital which was based out of my home airfield here in Leeds. Once Capital went bust in the late 80's he left and set up OBA in 1991. He says he is an ex airline training captain but i'm unsure about that I just thought he was in operations but hey I may be wrong.    Report

I did not complete a PPL there, but did a IMC and Night rating. Weather excellent, doesn't suffer from those Florida Thunderstorms. I flew from LongBeach in California.    Report
