New site looks good. I particularly like the weather section with TAF/METAR translation. That's going to be one I bookmark for sure! I think the 'my detail' section can be improved around the usability. For example instead of a drop down (where you can only select on item) you can have a list where you can do multiple selection with the ctr or alt keys. Good stuff all around Regards
Frederic Thanks for the comments The site has been some months in development and there will be a refresh taking into account points such as this later in the year.
It's a pity there's no "printer friendly" option for those long articles... Now I have to copy and paste them into word documents before printing them decently.
Problem with your style sheets (if that is what you use) rollover links - sometimes text goes up a point. Don't say it's deliberate - looks pants. Otherwise, general look & feel modern - not played around enough yet.
Do I take it you are leading the site development?
Specific "problems" so far include ...
1 - I registered but it still shows me as "casual browser" and won't give access to some content.
2 - I just received the May 2003 issue in the post and tried entering my postcode and subscriber ID number. It is not clear what the subscriber ID number is though - I have two 5 digit numbers above my name. Which one is the subscriber ID or is it both? I have tried all variants and tried postcode with and without the middle space. But still no joy. The instructions may need to be a little more specific.
3 - some attempts led to an error page with some kind of .Net stack-dump whilst others just came back with cannot-find-account type responses.
4 - I'm sure that a lot of goodwill will attend your endeavours. Can I suggest you add a page of information on current development activities so that folks can gain a sense that any problems they may report are getting actioned? AIS fell down this hole big-time and are still very weak there. By contrast AvBrief are quick and communicative which is helping subscribers bear with them when there are any problems.
All the best,
Alastair

Re: New Site
Alastair
I am a Director of the company which owns PILOT and very active Private Pilot so pay a lot of attention to our activities with PILOT magazine and PilotWeb. I was involved in some of the strategic issues on development of the web site but don't have day to day responsibility for technical development or editorial stance. I do, however, 'poke my nose' into these areas on a regualr basis and am keen to see the service improve so am being a pain internally with raising issues where there are problems.
I've just joined today and although the site is very nice I didn't find what I was looking for. Since there is no contact page for submitting feedback I'm guessing this is the best place :-)
* registration oddities with poor feedback * no webmaster or feedback details * suggestions box?
I also found useful information so there's positive feedback too!
Hello Ian Nice effort, I really like the weather section but fine tuning is required. Having clicked the "title" box in pilot details, I cannot remove it so now I have a (far too formal) "Mr" Howard Anderson. How about dropping titles? Who needs them?
Another aggravating thing, links to individual pictures from the photos section only work using Microsoft software (IE). I realise browser compatibility is an issue on the web but supporting just one US company is really the pits. If you bought a C172, you would be fed-up if you arrived at an airfield and were told "the fuel here only works in Pipers!". We do not all fly Cessnas nor all use Microsoft software.
A nice site that will be very useful, it works better than the AIS site!
This new site represents a great effort and will be one to watch as you ease out the teething problems. I just hope that the users keep coming back and give you the traffic you need to keep it running, no mean task!
One small issue not mentioned before; can you make the lists of articles pages longer? It is MUCH faster to scroll a page up and down looking through lists of links rather than moving from Page 1 to Page 2 etc. Obviously you might need to split up at some point but only when the list is, say 50 or 100 long...
Can you tell me which browser and operating system you are using to access the site?
All major functionality *should* work fine across the latest versions of IE, Opera and Netscape. If something isn't working as advertised, please let me know and I'll see what can be done to resolve.
I'm using Safari on Mac OS X and the site works fine for me. I also tried I.E.5 and Netscape for Mac OS X - no problems.
regards the site:
I like the bright 'friendly' design and the ease of navigation. However, the site lacks traffic compared to some 'other aviation magazines' sites!
Suggestions:
1. Have daily updates to news and information on home page. More articles for news and also easier methods of 'picking' the news, as suggested earlier.
2. Open the forum access to non-subscribers, and also let people choose if they wish to register or not. This will encourage more people to try the site. Once you get more people visiting and contributiong to the forums, things will 'take off' (pardon the pun).
3. Have better designed and threaded forums, with the facility to get e-mailed of changes in a thread, if requested by poster.
4. Offer a 'basic' level of useability, linking into all the 'free' access sites of aviation interests, e.g. NATS, CAA, Flight planning etc. Then offer enhanced access and services to magazine subscribers if you wish.
Have you seen some of the US flight planning sites such as AeroPlanner? Can flight plan on-line, plot routes, get weather, NoTAMs etc and thenm print out flight logs, routes etc with the option to download maps/data to either a GPS or to a Palm handheld. Am able to use it to turn my Palm m505 into a moving map display if needed. It would be good to turn the site into a 'one stop' aviation portal. The airfield data is a good step towards this.
