Yeh I am pleased with my progress. I can’t take my skills test until I am 17 which is in October but I wouldn’t have thought I will be at the right standard or have enough hours by that time anyway.
Sounds like you’re doing very well! Sounds like you get along with your instructor as well which helps enormously. Where you flying from?
I’m off to Goodwood (Chichester) airfield on Friday for some land away’s. I hear that it is a grass strip which should be different.
I don't get enough hours in per month to make any speedy progress!
I think I have rather a lot occupying my mind at current and it doesn't really help me maintain my focus. I am starting to doubt, already, that I can make it to the end.
Just simply because of the sheer amount that needs to be learnt and remain as knowledge that I can rely on in a split second. I just need to offload some other things before this has any space to grow.
I fly from Gloucestershire (EGBJ) with Cotswold Aero Club. I have ambitions to go commercial but I don't know if it will ever happen, financial constraints etc. might put an end to it. I'm 25, which isn't too old, but it does mean that I already have commitments (house etc.) which will make the leap required to CPL/ATPL that much harder, and more risky should I not succeed. For now I'm just learning and enjoying it, and I'll just see houw it goes...
Aviator Chris - it does seem like a lot to take in doesn't it? I'm lucky in that I sold my car, which is allowing me to afford one lesson a week for the time being. If I hadn't got that bit of luck I think I'd be finding it a lot harder...even on weekly lessons I feel like I've forgotten most about last week by the time I get back in the seat. Easier said than done I guess but don't think too much about how much you still have to do, we're at similar stages I think and the thought of Nav and stuff terrifies me at the moment, so I'm just trying to not worry too much and cross that bridge when I get there. For now I'm just trying to enjoy what I can learn and worry about the rest later.
Honestly guys you have absolutely nothing to worry about! As TimmyP said cross each bridge when you come to it. I thought I would never get nav as there is so much to think about and to do. But after a while like anything in flying you learn to get it and eventually love it. If I can do it then I think anyone can do it. :)
Oh and TimmyP you have ages to get yourself geared up financially for going commercial. You are a spring chicken in the aviation world! ;)
Chris
Says the teenager! Haha.
For the forseeable future it's a great hobby to get out of my day-job for me. Long term, who knows, but if I do ever get there I'd like to do it without borrowing too much, just to minimise the problems if there turns out to be a lack of jobs at the end!
Yea I'm 24, same issues for me regarding current commitments etc.
As much as I would probably love flying for a job, I don't want this to become my work. Aviation is a deep passion that would be ruined the moment somebody else gave me a schedule on when I have to fly.
I'm sure i'll wade through it, hoping to get some studying done and medical this month so next month I can have a blitz on lessons, maybe 4!
Yeh I know what you are saying, I just can’t imagine doing anything else though. I’m going to try as hard as I can to do this for a job. I’m working 2 jobs as well as being a full time student just to pay for some of my PPL. I’m gunna have to pay a lot back to the rents! :s
Hey Jude. (bet you've never heard that one before...sorry, promise I won't do it again). I thought about Staverton Flying School but had a recommendation from a friend for Cotswold, so that's where I ended up, using the Robins that they have. I guess you're on C152/172? What days do you fly on? We should meet up sometime, I have about 5.75hrs now including my trial lesson, so we're probably at about the same stage?
Had another lesson today, the weather wasn't so great with cloud only at about 2000ft in most places. I was with a different instructor since mine is off on holiday for a few weeks, and it was quite nice to experience it slightly differently today. I made my first radio calls which went ok (apart from the most complicated take-off clearance ever!) and did the take-off as per last week, but a lot better. Then it was a whole hour of going round in circles doing level, climbing and descending turns which was great - we found a hole over Malvern and went up to about 4500ft, which was higher than the surrounding cloud, which was great (first time 'on top' for me!). I'm flying the circuit upon return to the airfield now, although under step-by-step guidance from the instructor, and today I actually completed the full approach and landed without much assistance, although we haven't done the briefing etc. on it yet. Next week is stalling...which I think might be the worst one for my phantom motion-sickness but if I can get through that then I'm sure I should be alright. It did come back a little bit today but after an hour of turns that's not that surprising!
Chris, yeah Gloucestershire is lovely, not just the airfield either. I've lived here all my life and take it for granted now but flying has put a new perspective on what a beautiful area it is...the only problem I find is picking something out on the horizon to fly towards when doing exercises, it tends to be flat-ish fields for miles in all directions unless you're pointing towards Malvern, May Hill or the Severn.
Sounds good TimmyP, should be doing my trip to goodwood tomorrow which should be good landing somewhere different than EGLK. You will soon be in the circuit which is great fun, I was so scared when I first had to make radio calls but I love it now. Hows the airlaw coming guys?
Wierd I was up today too..........about 10.30. A bright yellow C152. Hadn't expected to fly today but got a call at 9.30 to say the slot was available.Haven't flown for about 3 weeks so was nice to get back up there. We're about the same hours. Have been doing the take-off for the last 4 lessons but did it like a nit today, talk about flapping about.
So have you got stuck into the Air Law yet? I've just started and no-one else is doing it at the moment at SFS, so would be good to go over stuff if you fancy.
Haven't got a regular flying day.........Thursday this week then Tuesday and Thursday or Friday next week.
Wish I was a local, came up this way from London a couple of years ago and still have trouble finding the airfield. Thank goodness for the M5 and the donut.
