Hey

Just thought i would say "hello" to everyone. I've just started my NPPL at BFC and will no doubt be asking questions in the near future. And who knows maybe answering some!

Thanks

Matter of interest why are you doing a NPPL rather than a PPL

I bet it goes along the reasons of....

Same course as PPL but...

Less money for Medical as it doesn't need the CAA Class 2, nor does it need renewal as often.

He doesn't wish to fly outside of the UK.

... and knowing our Government, the NPPL will have extra features in a few years which will rival the JAR-PPL.

To be honest, as time goes on, I'm considering swapping over to the NPPL. I have a Class 2 medical already, but that only lasts 5 years and cost a lot more than the HGV medical would. Plus I'm doubting that I could afford to fly outside the UK, or wish to really. Maybe in my dreams but thats it. UK has plenty of places I wish to visit!

I'm doing a NPPL because it was cheaper to start. I will go on and get my PPL as i would like to become a commercail pilot or an instructer. As i'm 15 and work in the restaurant at my flying club I just wanted to get flying and the best way for me to do that was by starting a NPPL. Only difference is the time and where i'm aloud to fly. Hope that helps :)

Chris you need a class 2 medical for a NPPL. I just had mine done and it cost me £138!! Seems alot for what they do. But then again they can charge any price because we need medicals :P

Hi Greg,

Sorry but I have to disagree.

I have a Class 2, as I was originally doing JAR-PPL (now NPPL due to costs).

All you need for an NPPL is a HGV Medical (Health signed off by your Doctor).

NPPL means that at the moment, you can't add any additional ratings i.e. Instrument Rating, Multi-Engine Piston Rating, Taildragger etc. It also means you can't fly outside of the UK (hence National PPL).

JAR-PPL gives you privilages of extra ratings, flying in the European states and building towards CPL and ATPL if required.

Hi Greg,

Yes, you will need a Class 2 for your PPL.

See below a link to the CAA's supporting documentation for the NPPL Medical Requirements.

Happy Flying!!

If you are doing the NPPL.... DON'T just do the 100kn mile QXC. Do the 150 as that also qualifies for the JAA PPL.I only did 100 and regret it now as I fly my Jodel all over the Country and need to do the longer QXC to upgrade. I have the NPPL and the only reason I did it was because I held a Glider Pilots License and got a large dispensation. The difference between them is only 13 hours training and I would not decide which until the latest moment as the syllabus is so similar apart from the Radio navigation etc. I doubt that the training will take much less for the NPPL as the JAA PPL in real terms.
