The dream is not over... At the moment I am 22 going on 23 and I have always wanted to be a pilot but have not been given a chance but i found out that there is a degree you can take now to become a pilot and the best university to do it in is Buckinghamshire Chilterns University College...
That way you can take out a student loan...
Anyways at the moment I am working on my A levels to get into the BA(hons) Air Transport with Commercial Pilot Training at Buckinghamshire Chilterns University College...
I hope this helps get back to me if you have found out a bit more...
Do you have anyone who would act as a guarantor for the loan? Or who might be willing to add the amount to their mortgage if you pay the difference off monthly. If you have relatives or (very good) friends who are willing to do this then the bank should have little problem with that.
Otherwise you may have to go down the route of unsecured lenders who charge a fortune in interest and my only provide some of the amount you need.
There is a full scholarship up for grabs at www.dream2fly.org so you could try that (submissions by 15th APRIL!) You clould also look for other scholarships.
There are uni degrees that cost a lot less than 50K that get you part way along to route to a job in airlines. Once on the inside, other opportunities mau open up.
Take the shorter route to a cpl and build time working whlie you build your hours.
Create a web site and sell pixels for advertising like the kid in the US did.
I don't have the answers but you will find them if you keep looking.
Keep the dream alive. There is always a way if you are persistent. It may just not be an easy way! Life is full of possibilities. Seek these not the obstacles.
I'm affraid i'm not in the position or know someone who will be willing to put there house down on the loan for me. I've been chatting to the banks along with my parents but no luck. The bank aren't willing to help me out with a loan due to my poor credit rating. (not had pre-paid credit before so, no credit score as of yet especially for that amount of cash)
I'm not goin to give up but a bank manger told me if i keep asking for credit my score will just decrease and decrease and I won't be able to get credit for a long time including a mortgage!!!
I've enquired to the loan sharks but was quickly put off by the monthly repayments over £1000 then there was the house to be secured which i don't have.
Thanks for your help.
Ryan.
P.s. anyone work in a bank and have access to the vault???
I would suggest trying to talk a family member with a house to underwrite a loan for you. Alternatively GAPAN offer various scolarships annually that you could apply for.
As of september I will be studying at BCUC doing commercial pilot training alongside an avaition degree. At first I was having trouble finding the finances to fund my flight training. I visited numerous banks in search of proffessional studies loan. HSBC do offer a loan that covers integrated training and some modular but not the BCUC course. If you go modular you could pay some of your may and get an unsecure or secured loan from a bank to pay the rest.
If your still unable to get the finances then ul have to be motivated and really want to become a pilot and work untill you have generated the finances yourself. There are always ways around things.
You dont actually need a house yourself. You need to have a good crdit rating obvioulsy but also you need to be able to prove to the bank that if you fail you can still pay back the loan. I have a degree and have been working as a Manager at McDonalds for 4 years.(not the best job but I runnin a £2 million turnover business every shift). The HSBC will give you a loan secured on your parents equity in their house. Providing they have 60k equity in their house which in the current market might be very likely you shoudl be able to get the laon. I intend on going to Cabair and they only have this arrangement with the Milton Keynes branch of the HSBC but you have to go to Cabair for it.
I dont think thats a big price to pay seeing as they now have a fleet of Diamond DA40 and DA42s with G1000 glass panel instruments and a 100% pass rate on the dreaded IR test
One way to get your ATPL, would be to do the ground school (theory) as a distance learning course, whilst you are working and then do the rest on a modular basis (as someone else suggested). But, do the modular bit, flying etc in Spain as the weather is better and the costs are cheaper ie same price as UK, but in Euros. That way it becomes more affordable, even though it´s still a lot of money. If you need contacts over here in Spain, drop me a line as I live in Spain and fly as well, so I know the good schools etc.
This time last year I was in agony after a laparotomy (see http://ae.medseek.com/adam04/images/en/10086.jpg for details) with six months of chemotherapy still to look forward to. Last week I got my Class 1 medical back (no restrictions). At no time did I ever even contemplate thinking or saying "The dream is over" - If you really want it, you'll find a way.
Talking of ways, have you seen The Bond Helicopters scholarship scheme ( http://www.oxfordaviation.net/bond/bond_info.htm with more info at http://www.pprune.org/forums/showthread.php?t=287912 ?). It may be "only" helicopters but I guarantee you more fun flying than an Airbus or Boeing (this statement from 5000hrs on Boeings, 2000 on helicopters, my ATPL(A) has lapsed). The pay scales are not too shabby either.
What has happened in the past has no bearing on the future direction you take. Does the wake of a ship determine the direction of travel? You're the Captain, turn the wheel.
Im not sure how far you have got with your training but if you havent yet got a PPL this is where you need to start. Its a long road to the CPL/IR and if i were you i would be looking at the modular route. Break it down into chunks and take each step as a seperate course. If i were you i would do the following:
Get a Credit card. Banks are bending over backwwards to give these out and you wont have a problem as long as your bad credit rating doesnt include CCJ's defaults etc. Try and get a good interest free deal for a few months.
Take the card to Florida and come back with a PPL and maybe some extra hours. (you may not even like flying once youve tried it)
Then (This is important) PAY OFF THE CARD whilst doing atpl distance learning through CATS (£1000) or someone else and working. You may be able to find a no equity group or other cheap flying to do to build the hours as well depending on how much you earn, but work on paying off that card on time as this will give you your credit rating.
Now you have PPL, ATPL theory and some hours plus a good credit rating. You will be able to get a career development loan for £8000 which i reckon will leave about £10000 for hours plus CPL/IR. Get your card out again and go to the bank for the rest. As a PPL holder with exams passed and good credit you should have no problem getting a smaller loan now. Much better than going to a bank with no flying experience or exams passed and asking for £30000. Also you will have less to pay off when you have finished.
I've read your posts and idea's and have been trying alsorts with the banks but at the moment I'm looking at doing the long distance learning and then going back to the bank asking for a loan. Which will hopefully stand me in better stead with the exams under my belt.
My plan then is to get as much as possible and work my butt off to try and get the practical exams passed the first time. I've got a plan of how I'm wanting to do my training but some of the banks don't want to know you if you haven't got anything for them. (which is understandable)
Thank you all for your time and replies please continue the feedback as I'm sure there is plenty of peopl out there in the same position.
Have tried looking outside the UK and europe. I suggest looking at this flying schools website: www.43airschool.com
It's in a place called Port Elizabeth in South Africa. All the prices are in South African Rands, so you will need to use an online currency converter. Good luck!
Hi all, Just heard that due to the credit crisis of the UK, banks and all other lenders are going to be making it stupidly hard to get credit. Hope you can get something sorted! i was reading about a chap who gained citizenship in the US and gained sponsorship or some sort of loan to do his ATPL.
Ryan, I think PUFF O WIND was actually trying to get you motivated to stop Whingeing and get on with it
i.e Don't just Give Up!!! If you give up that easy then you certainly haven't got what it takes.
PO Wind is a very experienced real time flying instructor who oviously knows what he is talking about
and as from myself as an ex Marine, just get on in there with what you have got, If you can't get what you want then try harder!!
"IF AT FIRST YOU DON'T SUCCEED, THEN TRY AND TRY AGAIN"
"IF YOU TRY HARDER AND DON'T SUCEED, TRY HARDER STILL"
Get the Drift???
Heres a clue, Go and get a Mortgage out and in 3 or 4 years time go get another valuation on the house and when the house price has gone up by another £50,000 then sell it and use £30,000 of your £50,000 profit to do your flying!!!! Believe me it works!!!!!
