When the weather warms up a bit (I don't want to pick up ice) I would like to fly to Durham Tees Valley or Newcastle from EGMA (Fowlmere) in a Socata TB10 or a Saratoga routing BKY DCT OTR DCT EGNV/EGNT. I intend to fly IFR (VFR on top!) as I have an IMC rating.
There is very little information on the AIP about the preferred routings into the Durham and Newcastle CTR from IFR traffic outside of controlled airspace, as it seems to be assumed that you would be using the airways system.
Firstly, any observations on the route or suggestions for an alternative route using VORs and NDBs. I would obviously plan visually as well in case a beacon was not operational.
Also should I fly a visual approach and landing or will Durham/Newcastle radar be happy to vector me to the ILS/clear me to fly a procedural ILS? I use an approach speed of 100 KIAS in the TB10 until 500 feet QFE, more in the Saratoga.
Not too sure on the route as I dont have my UK charts etc with me.
As for the ILS just check on the aerodrome plates for speeds and limitations. Often busy airports dont allow certain categories of aircraft due to the very slow approaches. If you are allowed in however then I would just ask for vectors to the ILS, makes it that little bit easier!
