Portable Intercom

Dear Pilotwebbers,

I would appreciate some advice, if I may...

As a recent PPL, I have just bought into a share in a rather elderly PA28-140. About the only problem with the aircraft is the standard of the intercom. I have had one checkout flight with my old instructor (who had a new headset) and couldn't understand a word he said. Next flight he will use an older headset, to see if it is a compatibility issue, however the other small issue is that the aircraft only has a 2-place intercom.

One option that was suggested (the group are a bit reluctant to shell out for a new fitted intercom) is a portable 4-place intercom, such as the Pilot PA4003BLS, which would  certainly solve the problem of back-seat passengers and, I am advised, improve communications with my instructor.

However does anyone have any experience of using these (or other 4-place) intercoms and are there any other points I should take into consideration?

Other than that, I have to say the aircraft is lovely to fly - and is much loved by many people on the airfield - many of whom have flown her in the past.

Many thanks.
