I just thought i would introduce myself! i'm Hannah and i'm 19...
I'd really like to become a pilot and i have applied at Leeds University to study Aviation and Pilot studies which will help me achieve a PPL, i also have a Trial Lesson booked at Durham Tees Valley Airport in January, so if you could let me know what to expect i would really appreciate it. Will i actually be able to fly the a/c or would they just show me what to do at first and maybe have a go once i'm used to the environment?
Im also 19 and presently just over half way through training to get my frozen ATPL with CTC Wings. I too obviously was keen in becoming a pilot when I left sixth form and chased up my dream.
As for your trial lesson you will be put in the captain's / flying pilots seat on the left and the instructor will sit on the right. They will give you hands on experience in everything they can from taxiing (if room allows) to all the basics in turning, climbing, descending and straight and level. It is a hands on lesson and you will also be allowed to log the time in your logbook at the end should you choose to continue with the PPL. Its good fun and really gives you a small taste of what is to come.
As for Leeds Uni, a friend on my course went there and covered most of the CPL/ATPL groundschool theory that we have covered in this course so far so it definatly is a good decision in prep for your airline career- after all you will have a degree behind your name too. Saying this however, the degree is absolutly not neccessary to become a pilot, every penny you spend on your degree course could be spent on flying hours which at the end of the day is the most important thing.
Best of luck with your trial lesson, dont hesitate to ask any further specific questions!
Welcome to this lovely place we all call a second home!
If you are an aviation nut like us lot, then you will enjoy the lesson thoroughly! Just make sure you are nice and fit to fly on the day since its winter (no colds etc.) as this will bother you at altitude. The main thing is to enjoy your time in the air and get a feel for the aircraft. Also to see how you feel in the left hand seat as its a little different from a commercial flight.
All the best and enjoy it! Your first light-flight is the first of many mile-stones!
Wow nice goal Hannah. All the best for your fly. Never ever give up your goal until you reach it and don't look back and step down with any discouragement.
