13/10/2009, 7:23 PM princepilot Joined on 29/05/2007 Posts 23 Training Hi, Anybody learned on a C172? as i went to a local airfield today and was told i couldnt learn on a C172 due to the instruments??? I cant learn on a C152 as im quite stocky and 18 stone , but was advised a Beagle Pup 2 seater would be ideal? Anyone learned on a Beagle Pup? , and anyone know if the restriction on learning on a C172 is his personal opinion or a general opinion?    Report

The plane may be unsuitable to fly becuase of the instruments not working, and they may men it has been grounded becuase the instruments are faulty. If not, then they are just PLANE weird!    Report

And if i went back to a C152 after i wouldnt know what to do? I explained i would never go to a C152 as im not a small bloke. Anyway i have decided to do my PPL on a low wing aircraft as the one i will be flying afterwards is going to be a 6 seat low wing (piper lance) so im going to learn on a warrior. Matt    Report

I'm a big built guy as well so its important for me to feel comfortable throughout the lessons. The panel I fly on has loads of gear in it including a double Garmin 430. Similar to this, but Jet-A1 - http://www.aero.und.edu/images/warriorpanel.jpg This alone is more busy than a 172 panel (http://www.downtownaviation.com/fleet_pic/Cessna172-panel.jpg) I think its important to be familiar with a well equipped panel - even though I dont use some of the instruments actively yet, my instructor has me setting them on occassions. When you are learning, you build up your knowledge of what each instrument does anyway. Those that you arn't familiar with at the time - you dont even look at. You will enjoy the Warrior! I have done 5 hours, and still look outside of the plane more than inside. I think it is just daft that you would not be able to go to the 152... what a load of tosh. If anything it would be far easier to go to the 152. Anyway, I think learning on the low wing aircraft would be a very good decision in the long run. happy flying!!    Report
