My Training has taken off but I cannot land

Pontius Pilot 14/02/2009, 5:48 PM

Have FS 2004. Been trying to use the Training section to learn about flying. Call me dumb but I four years later I still cannot make out heads or tails about how to navigate to the airport of my choice and actually find it, and actually land on it. Basically I cannot navigate to anything. I'm not looking for any specific answers and I do not want ANY referral to the FS 2000 Training Sections. I am looking to buy or download any alternative (excellent) Training Aids. I want to Master the Ins and Outs of Flying but I want an FS 2004 or FSX Training Aids that take one slowly, systematically and thoroughly from the bottom up. Please recommend away ... and Thanks in anticipation. Pontius Pilot

Buy a PPL Navigation book and read it.

Thing is its a bit different to flight simulator as you cannot use dead reconing on the simulator- ie VFR flight unless you have excellent graphics and ground features to go by.  What most people do on flight sim is pull up the Garmin GPS and program that with a direct route to wherever you want to go and then fly it.  Create a flight simulator flight plan on the 'home page' of the game and then fly it.

As for finding it when you think you are close, select the ATC option that requests airport location and they will give you the general direction using the clock code.

Practice makes perfect!

I would recomend a PPL coarse to coincide with your flight sim. You will need a chart and the proper frequency's, know how to use the GPS mode (although that is not in the PPL training) Get yourself a flying instructor.

You can also beacon hop to get used to VOR and NDB's but you need to know the correct frequency's and have a VFR chart.

Do you live anywhere near Sherburn Aero Club North Yorkshire? We have a flight simulator group meeting once a month if you could get along we train people in navigation and could supply you with charts! The group as a number of real world pilots who are happy to pass on there knowledge! And you might even bag yourself a flight for real! Check out our site at...http://sherburnaeroclub.website.orange.co.uk/
