Has anyone had a load from a bank to pay for their Commercial training? The reason for me asking is because I read about gaining an ATPL in the latest Pilot magazine, and was woundering how hard it was to get the loan.
HSBC is the fav, they have a specific loan for professional pilot studies. I personally don’t have an account with them, but I know that they were definitely more pro flying career loans than the others when I was looking.
Maybe it’s worth you opening an account with them and get some credit history if that is the route you are looking for.
Be careful with the whole loan thing though, the buck doesn't end with a shiny new blue book... check www.pprune.com and you can see too many who have financially bitten off more than they can chew.
Sound advice from Captain Buddle there. I arranged mine with Barclays, they were great. Now then Kev my old mucker, what's happening? Did anyone ever beat your 'yard of ale' time in good old Cafe P? Aaaah....happy days....!!!
I have been looking at ctc aviation website http://www.ctcaviation.com and find that £60.000 is alot of money to borrow from a bank. I am currently at university and will get a business ba hons degree at the end (may 2005). I have been interested in becoming a pilot since a young age when I first went up in a cesna 152, because my relation has a ppl and takes me up a couple of times a year.
When I get my degree, my plans are to get a job and aventually pay for my ppl (I understand this is around 5 grand?). Then if I want to progress, it will be a smaller loan I would have to take from the bank if I apply for ctc mcalpine.
An issue that does bother me, I am not very good at maths and failed gcse maths. Would I have to re-sit or would my degree be sufficient? I think I could pass with some hard work but have always had trouble with the subject.
Some suggestions: see if your university has an air squadron attached - you may be able to get some inexpensive flying there which would count towards your PPL.
With a good degree you may be able to get sponsorship from one of the airlines - some, like BA, are just beginning to sponsor students through ATPL courses. Of course, you're locked in to them afterwards for a while but at least you'll have a job. Some airlines, like easyjet, have an arrangement with certain training organisations. A good place to look is the BALPA website - it has a page of sponsorship opportunities.
Flying with a UAS IMHO is the best possible way to learn to fly, not just cheap (=free!) flying but the highest quality of instruction as well. You also get to meet a great group of like-minded people; although its now more than 20 years since I left ULAS (London UAS)(yes, I lied about my age..) I still count a number of them as very good mates. Indeed, at Ultimate High we employ a number of current UAS members as ground staff to help the Instructors out and manage the aircraft. Definitely worth taking a very close look at.
Daniel, if you are not too hot at Maths then you either need to get better or think about doing something other than flying aeroplanes.
A business BA hons degree should require you to have reasonable 'adding up' skills but as Greeners suggests for a life in flying you are still going to need some mathematical dexterity despite the computerisation of many systems. The training still requires you to know it, and be capable of doing it, the hard way.
Even the PPL will require some reasonable maths skills but that is nothing compared to working out great circle routes, point of no return etc. etc. etc which is the territory of the commercial licence.
CABAIR!?!?! lol, no, they do have a few oppertunities, but these are once every blue moon, and if you don't have a Masters from Cambridge or Oxford, no chance for any of you people out there. CABAIR do offer a scholarship like every 2 years, but its not worth relying on getting a sponsorship, thats why i tell people, if you want to fly, get A GOOD JOB, AND PAY FOR YOURSELF!
Hi all, this is my first post. im gonna start my my frozen ATPL this sept. i need £40 000 over a period of three years for this. i am doing this course through a university. could anyone tell me where to get the best student pilot loans from, which banks. if anyone has any advice, i would appreciate it.
well there is this thing...where you can get a student loan....but they wouldn't give u 50,000..... at the max its about 20,000 there intrest rate is low.
Obtain my PPL at a same time as building a cheap to run Aircraft to build up hours and ask my local sky diving centre if they want any pilots , in that way you don't need to pay to fly and don't get paid either. I will add ratings and obtain a CPL Licence until I have enough qualifications to get a job as a pilot then in that way you will not end up in trouble financially.
I think people want things instantly these days like a meal shoved in a microwave and done within seconds.
